Weldon was first settled just after the turn of the 20th century by Norwegian settlers, and many residents today trace their family roots back to them. The village sits in the aspen parkland of the Rural Municipality of Kinistino, about halfway between Prince Albert and Melfort, and it incorporated as a village on January 24, 1914.
The Norwegian heritage is still a living part of village life. Senior residents keep strong ties to Norway, and every May 17 Weldon holds a large Syttende Mai celebration, a significant cultural event for the community. In 2005, a Homecoming Celebration over the Canada Day weekend made the village's population grow fivefold.
Today Weldon is known for its old growth tree-lined streets and the farmland around it. It has a seniors lodge, a library, a riding club, a winter recreation centre and an auditorium/gymnasium complex. Its grain elevators have also drawn attention from fans of the video game Team Fortress 2, who see in them a resemblance to the map 2Fort.
On September 4, 2022, Weldon and nearby James Smith Cree Nation were the scene of a mass stabbing in which 11 people were killed and 17 others injured.
